Drew

Lainey and I had been dating for two weeks, and I had barely thought about the test results. Maybe a little bit at night, but my thoughts were filled with her. We were going to dinner and then to see a band. I thought it was time I confided in her about what I was dealing with. I already knew I liked her, but it was early enough in our relationship that she could tell me it was too much and I would be OK.

I did have friends I played baseball with and met at the park for a scrimmage, but I wouldn’t really pull one of them aside to talk about my feelings.

We ordered our meals and I told Lainey that it was really cool she didn’t hold the whole PTA thing with my mom against me.

She said she could only imagine how badly it must suck having to deal with all of the backlash.

I nodded and said it did, but I had something bigger on my mind. Suddenly, I was spilling my guts to Lainey about my parents not getting along, and my dad and the gene, and then me possibly having the gene.

She was pale as a ghost. Should I not have told her?

She said that of course I should have told her—I’m her boyfriend. I missed her next few sentences—she said “boyfriend.” Yes!

I refocused and said I knew it was a lot but I really had no one to talk to and I was kind of freaked out.

She grabbed my hand and said, “Well, now you have me.”

I had another week to wait for the results, I told her, and she said she thought it was messed up that my dad left after my mom had just gotten home.

She then asked what would happen if I had the gene.

I said, from what I understood, I would just have to constantly be checked, like every three months, so if I did have any signs, I could proactively start treating it.

She quickly said that we shouldn’t worry about that until we knew. And then she said she would be there for me so I wasn’t alone.

I paid the bill, and we headed over to see the band and continued to have another blissful night. I couldn’t believe holding someone’s hand could make me feel so euphoric.

I was totally going to kiss her tonight. I was taking my permit test tomorrow. I couldn’t believe we needed a ride.

I had to make my move before my mommy picked us up. The worst!

I was nervous as hell, but I turned to her and moved a strand of hair off her face, and she looked into my eyes, and it happened. I think I might have seen stars. I wasn’t quite sure if I would get it right, but it was just so natural and it seemed that she was happy too.

My mom picked us up, and we dropped Lainey off. As we headed back to our house, she asked if I would have dinner with her tomorrow night.
